RECOMMENDATION(S):
Recommendation
That the Board of Supervisors approve the attached supplemental budget for budget unit 221, fixed asset line 8774, for a patrol vehicle assigned to the Civil Division; and approve the donation of four vehicles purchased by Sheriff Operations to Public Works - Motor Pool for capitalization, maintenance, and insurance.

DISCUSSION:
The Sheriff's Office - Civil Division has two deputies responsible for serving all the civil papers and evictions throughout Humboldt County. The civil deputies require a fully equipped patrol vehicle because they are often called upon to handle emergency calls for service if they are closer to the incident than other on-duty patrol deputies.

The nature of the civil deputies' work requires deputies to work before and after normal business hours and sometimes on the weekends. Their work hours overlap the department's patrol shifts making it virtually impossible for the civil deputies to rotate vehicles with patrol. It is more effective for the overall operations of the Sheriff's department to assign vehicles to the civil deputies so they can work the hours necessary to do their job.

Currently, there is a shortage of patrol vehicles making it difficult to effectively coordinate and meet all the requirements of the Sheriff's Office. Purchasing a patrol vehicle specifically for the civil division will allow the Civil Division to more effectively do their job.
