DISCUSSION:
Chief Probation Officer Shaun Brenneman has announced his retirement effective April 14, 2023. Coral Sanders has been serving as the Assistant Chief Probation Officer since Sept. 18, 2022, and has nearly 24 years of experience in the Probation Department. In addition, the Courts have expressed support for this staff recommendation. Given Ms. Sanders vast knowledge and experience in Probation, it is recommended that you Board appoint her as the Interim Chief Probation Officer effective April 15, 2023 and continuing until such time as a permanent appointment may be finalized.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The annual salary and benefits for the Chief Probation Officer has been included in the Fiscal Year 2022-23 and will also be budgeted in Fiscal Year 2023-24. The current salary for Chief Probation Officer at a step 1A is $174,838.

STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK:
This action supports your Board's Strategic Framework by enforcing laws and regulations to protect residents and providing community-appropriate levels of service.

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
Humboldt County Supervisor Court

ALTERNATIVES TO STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS:
Your Board could choose to appoint someone else to serve in this role. This is not recommended as Ms. Sanders is currently serving as the Assistant Probation Officer and the courts have expressed support for this appointment.
