DISCUSSION:
Prior to Covid-19, 2.7 million California residents were without health insurance and another 12 million were underinsured despite gains made since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.

The federal, Improve Medicare for All Bill, HR 1976 would establish comprehensive, universal single-payer healthcare with a cost control system for the benefit of all residents of the nation, and guarantee that all residents of Humboldt County would be fully covered for healthcare without co-pays, deductibles, or other out-of-pocket costs and would save millions in taxpayer dollars now spent on premiums that often provide inadequate health insurance coverage for government employees and would save the county the cost burden of a health insurance provision.

The Board of Supervisors has been asked to support single-payer bills for healthcare reform. HR 1976, Improved Medicare for All would guarantee care without charge at the point of service for all California residents for all necessary medical care including prescription drugs, hospital, surgical and outpatient services, primary and preventive care, emergency services, reproductive care, dental and vision care, and long-term care.
