DISCUSSION:
Currently, to qualify for the elected office of Sheriff a candidate must have an advanced certificate issued by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training or meet a combination of certain educational degree and full-time, salaried law enforcement experience. Senate Bill 271 is an act to amend Section 13.5 of the Elections Code, and to repeal Section 24004.3 of the Government Code relating to local government. This amendment would allow for any person eighteen years of age to be allowed to run for the Humboldt County Office of Sheriff regardless of experience and qualifications.
Supervisor Bohn and Supervisor Bushnell would like to send a letter of opposition to Senator Wiener and those in support because expertise and specific training cannot be under valued when electing a Sheriff. It is through education and experience that a Sheriff not only fulfills their responsibilities to the citizens of the county, but to the many aspects of law enforcement that he oversees.
