DISCUSSION:

The Board of Supervisors have been notified of three members of the Fire Safe Council that are resigning from their positions.  The Board would like to send letters of appreciation and express their well wishes on their future endeavors.  The members are as follows:

Ian Sigman was one of the original members of the HCFSC when it was formed in 2002.  He has been the longstanding Chair of the HCFSC, guiding the group through many meetings and keeping the group focused on the agenda and needed action. Ian was also involved in assisting with the original draft and every subsequent update to the Humboldt County Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP); particularly helpful with the maintenance and implementation of the Mattole-Lost Coast CWPP Planning Unit Action Plan.  Ian helped to provide an important link between the activities of the countywide FSC and the Lower Mattole FSC and the Honeydew Fire Department. He was the first district representative.

Barbara Darst, as the long time Vice-Chairperson of the Humboldt County Fire Safe Council, provided backup to Ian and deftly lead meetings and made sure the group stayed on time. Barbara was and is a strong leader within the Willow Creek FSC and provided many good examples of community-based wildlife mitigation action to the other members of the HCFSC. She was a huge support for each update of the Humboldt County CWPP, particularly the Willow Creek Area CWPP Planning Unit Action Plan. She worked hard to use the Unit Action Plan and their own local Willow Creek Area CWPP to guide real progress on the ground. Barbara was also a helpful community link for county staff; helping to plan wildfire preparedness workshops and events in her community. Barbara was an at-large member.

Mike Lake, has been an At-Large member since 2016, nominated by and representing the Southern Humboldt Fire Chiefs’ Association. He participated in and provided support for the most recent update of the CWPP (particularly the Avenue of the Giants CWPP Planning Unit Action Plan); efforts to plan for sustainable fire and rescue services throughout the county; and the development of several grant-funded projects currently being implemented to advance CWPP goals. Mike provided an important local fire services perspective and informed both planning and action that resulted in real improvements to the level of fire and rescue services provided to citizens residing in Humboldt and visitors alike.  Mike was also an invaluable community link for county staff; helping to plan and host wildfire preparedness workshops and events in his community (he grills a mean hamburger). Mike was an at-large member.

New appointments to the HCFSC will fall under an additional agenda item at a future date.
