RECOMMENDATION(S):

Recommendation

That the Board of Supervisors:

1.                     Accept a donation in the amount of $31,000.00 from the Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Foundation to support the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office; and

2.                     Approve the attached supplemental budget (Attachment 1) to receive the donation in budget unit 1100-221 Sheriff Operations to purchase trauma kits and other emergency supplies for the Sheriff Patrol Deputies (4/5 vote required).

Body

SOURCE OF FUNDING

Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Foundation

DISCUSSION:

The Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Foundation has awarded the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office $31,000.00 to upgrade the Sheriff Patrol Deputies first aid kits to trauma kits and purchase other emergency supplies.  Sheriff Patrol Deputies are usually the first to arrive on a scene where there has been a violent incident resulting in needed medical attention.  The first aid kits the Deputies currently have aren’t sufficient to handle the more violent incidents and Deputies do the best they can with their first aid kits until medical personnel arrive on the scene.  The donation will be used to upgrade the first aid kits to include trauma kits which will enable the Deputies to provide lifesaving assistance until medical personnel are able to arrive.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

A supplemental budget is requested to Sheriff Operations 1100-221 to receive the $31,000.00 donation to purchase trauma kits and other emergency supplies.   There is no additional impact to the general fund.

STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK:

This action supports your Board’s Strategic Framework by seeking outside funding sources to benefit Humboldt County needs.

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:

None

ALTERNATIVES TO STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS:

The Board of Supervisors may choose not to accept the donation and approve the supplemental budget, however, that is not recommended as the Sheriff’s Office would not be able to upgrade their first aid kits to trauma kits to provide lifesaving assistance to Humboldt County residents in need.
