DISCUSSION:
The Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS)- Child Welfare Services (CWS) is continuing its efforts to change processes, procedures, and organizational culture to better serve Native American children and families. A formal protocol for communication with the Tribal Chairs, established government to government, would enable DHHS-CWS to provide needed updates and establish a mechanism for addressing inquiries and feedback. The attached letters initiate the request.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
There is no financial impact.
STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK:
This action supports your Board’s Strategic Framework by building interjurisdictional and regional cooperation.
OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
Northern California Tribal Chairmen’s Association
ALTERNATIVES TO STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS:
The Board may choose to not authorize signing of the attached letters. This is not recommended as DHHS-CWS’s ability to move forward with work to better serve Native American children and families requires that they provide updates to and receive feedback from Tribal Chairs.
