DISCUSSION:

Natural resource utilization and management remains a vital part of the Karuk culture.  The Karuk Tribe’s aboriginal territory encompasses over 1.48 million acres of Northern California and Southern Oregon.  Currently, 95% of Karuk territory is managed by the Six Rivers and Klamath National Forests.  As a result, the Tribe struggles to ensure that traditional management practices and cultural values are integrated into management decisions.

Katimiin is the single most important Karuk scared site as it is location of the final series of ceremonies at the close of Pikyavish each year.  Pikyavish is often referred to as “World Renewal Ceremonies”.  Katimiin is located at the confluence of the Klamath and Salmon Rivers.

The County of Humboldt would like to send a letter of support for the repatriation of Katimiin and Ameekyaaraam, Karuk sacred sites, asking that the Tribal ceremonial leaders and traditional practitioners have access to these lands for traditional and customary uses in perpetuity.
