That the Board of Supervisors:
1. Appoint Meagan O’Connell to the position of Public Defender on an interim basis effective Monday, March 23, 2020.

DISCUSSION:
Due to the absence of the current Public Defender, Marek Reavis, staff recommends the interim appointment of Meagan O’Connell until the return of Mr. Reavis, or another solution is identified. Meagan O’Connell has 7 years of experience as a Public Defender and is willing to accept the interim appointment.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The salary for the Public Defender is currently budgeted in the Public Defender budget (1100-219) for fiscal year 2019-20. The current salary for a Public Defender at step 1A is $13,345 per month.

This action supports your Board’s Strategic Framework by providing community-appropriate levels of service .

ALTERNATIVES TO STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS:
