DISCUSSION:
The second Monday of October is a federal holiday known as Columbus Day. In recent years, several California counties and cities have chosen to recognize this day as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. This year, on October 14, 2019, Governor Gavin Newsom proclaimed October 14, 2019, as “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” in California. In doing so, the governor paid respect to the cultures and populations that existed long before European contact; and celebrated the contributions of all indigenous peoples to the culture of diversity, innovation, and resilience that has marked California as a leader on the global stage.
Renaming this day gives a more balanced representation of our country’s and local region’s history. By adopting this resolution, the county would be recognizing the vast and valuable contributions made to our community through Indigenous Peoples’ contributions as well as fostering racial equality and denouncing oppression.
