DISCUSSION:

After twenty-four years of operation, the Eureka Library’s water heater needs to be replaced.  It has a sizeable leak which cannot be repaired.  Public Works has given the Library an estimate of the cost to replacement water heater providing hot water and heat to the Library.  Due to the Library’s architecture, Public Works is unable to navigate the new water heater through narrow passageways and tight corners of the Library.  A boom lift is needed to hoist the water heater to the roof.  Public Works will need to subcontract this part of the project to MapleService Plumbing and Heating.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

The cost to replace the hot water heater is $10,000, funding is available for this expenditure through fund balance. There will be no impact on the general fund.

STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK:

This action supports your Board’s Strategic Framework by providing for and maintaining infrastructure .

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:

Public Works will work with subcontractor MapleService to remove the old water heater and install a new one.

ALTERNATIVES TO STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS:

The Board may chose not to approve the supplemental budget transfer.  When the water heater completely fails the Eureka Library will be without hot water or heat.  Run off from the old water heater could potentially damage the building.
