DISCUSSION:
On December 20, 2022 at 2:34 a.m., a violent 6.4m earthquake occurred in Humboldt County, causing significant damages countywide, including, but not limited to: damaged homes, damaged bridges, cracked roadways, landslides, downed trees, downed power lines, damage and loss of commercial structures, loss of telephone services, damage to community water storage, water lines, gas lines, and also two deaths and 11 reported injuries. This wide range of damage necessitated multiple local and state agencies to respond to provide for public safety, emergency medical response, assessment and tagging of damaged buildings and residences, emergency repairs to public roadways, conducting damage assessments, mass care and sheltering services, and debris clearing.
The 2022 December Ferndale Earthquake adversely impacted the City of Rio Dell, which by all accounts experienced the most severe damages both to the city's public infrastructure and to residential dwellings. A known 381 dwelling units in the City of Rio Dell alone were affected by the initial earthquake and subsequent aftershocks, resulting in approximately 24.58% of the city's housing stock either being red or yellow tagged due to safety concerns.
In the year since the 2022 December Ferndale Earthquake, recovery efforts have made significant strides in getting Rio Dell residents returned to their pre-disaster homes, assisting with finding alternate living accommodations, and connecting impacted residents with recovery resources to help meet ongoing unmet needs.
