DISCUSSION:

Men’s Health Month, recognized nationally each June, serves as a critical reminder of the unique health challenges faced by men and boys. Statistically, men are less likely to seek regular medical care, are at higher risk for many chronic diseases and have a shorter average life expectancy than women. These disparities are even more pronounced among men of color and those in historically underserved communities.

By promoting awareness and preventive care, Men’s Health Month encourages men to take proactive steps toward better health-such as routine physical exams, cancer screenings, mental health check-ins and healthy lifestyle choices. It also provides an opportunity for employers, healthcare providers, and local governments to support these efforts through education, outreach and accessible services.

In Humboldt County, recognizing Men’s Health Month aligns with broader public health goals and equity initiatives. The proposed proclamation and supporting activities, such as health education campaigns, wellness challenges, community partnerships and participation in Wear Blue Day, help foster a culture of prevention and support within Humboldt’s workforce and community.
