DISCUSSION:
Cesar Chavez Day, observed annually on March 31, recognizes the life and legacy of Cesar Chavez and his contributions to the labor movement, particularly in advancing the rights and working conditions of farmworkers.
In recognition of the broader contributions of farmworkers, past and present, staff recommends renaming the County of Humboldt's observance to "Farmworkers Day." This change is intended to honor the collective efforts, sacrifices and ongoing importance of farmworkers in Humboldt County and throughout California. Farmworkers play a vital role in sustaining local agriculture, supporting the regional economy and ensuring food security.
Renaming the observance provides an opportunity to acknowledge not only the historical leadership of Cesar Chavez, but also the diverse individuals and communities who contribute to agricultural labor today. The proposed name emphasizes inclusivity and recognizes the ongoing contributions of farmworkers across generations.
The proposed change would apply to county references, communications and internal observances. The date of March 31 will remain unchanged.
