RECOMMENDATION(S):
Recommendation
That the Board of Supervisors:
1. Accept a donation, with a retail value of approximately $11,750, of 100 convertible car seats and 50 booster seats designated for children of families with low income.
2. Authorize the Director of Public Health Nursing or their designated representative to accept the delivery of the car seats.

DISCUSSION:
Since 2003, Humboldt County Public Health, Maternal Child and Adolescent Health's Child Passenger Safety Program has distributed car seats to low-income families. The goal to reduce death and injuries to children from birth to twelve years of age by increasing the awareness and correct use of car seats and booster seats is achieved through education on California laws, best practices when choosing the correct car seat and/or booster seat for the child's height, weight and age and on proper installation in vehicles. Referrals are received from county and other local agencies when a family needs a car seat or booster seat. Seats are distributed once the family has received verbal education regarding car seats, California Laws and proper fit for the child. Family is shown how to properly install the seat in their vehicle and asked to install the seat while being observed by a certified child passenger safety technician. Safety equipment will be distributed at community events and in a classroom or individual setting.
If accepted, the Child Passenger Safety Program would distribute seats to low-income families in our community. This donation will allow the Child Passenger Safety Program to disseminate these safety equipment items at no-cost for the benefit of California children up to age 18 who are from low...
