Resolution Opposing New and Existing Offshore Oil and Gas Drilling and Deep Seabed Mining and Approving the County of Humboldt's Participation in the Local Government Outer Continental Shelf Coordination Program and Coalitionend
RECOMMENDATION(S):Recommendation
That the Board of Supervisors:
1. Adopt the attached resolution opposing new and existing offshore oil and gas drilling and deep seabed mining and approving the County of Humboldt's participation in the Local Government Outer Continental Shelf Coordination Program and Coalition; and
2. Nominate a Board member to represent the County of Humboldt in the Local Government Outer Continental Shelf Coordination Program and Coalition; and
3. Authorize the County Administrative Officer, or a designee thereof, to engage in advocacy that reflects the County of Humboldt's opposition to new and existing offshore oil and gas drilling and deep seabed mining.

DISCUSSION:
The announcement of a new five (5) year Outer Continental Shelf Offshore Oil and Gas Leasing Plan is anticipated to originate from the United States Department of Interior this fall, possibly as early as October 15, 2025. At this time, there is no indication as to whether or not offshore tracts along the coast of Humboldt County will be offered for lease to the petroleum industry. Leases anywhere off the California Coast, however, can be anticipated to impact the coastline of Humboldt County.
