DISCUSSION:

Juneteenth, celebrated each year on June 19, commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Texas were finally informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth serves as a powerful reminder of the continued pursuit of racial equity and justice.

Juneteenth is a time to reflect on the long struggle for freedom and civil rights, and to celebrate the strength, creativity and leadership of Black communities in Humboldt County and beyond. With this Juneteenth Day proclamation, the Board of Supervisors reaffirms its commitment to honoring African American history and promoting inclusivity throughout Humboldt County.
