RECOMMENDATION(S):
Recommendation
That the Board of Supervisors:
1. Approve, and authorize the Chair to execute, the agreement approving funding for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the North Coast, Inc. to demonstrate healthy adult role models and positive one-to-one mentorships to children for the period of July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020 in an amount not to exceed $60,834.40; and
2. Direct the Clerk of the Board to route the fully executed agreement to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) - Contract Unit for further processing.

DISCUSSION:
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the North Coast, Inc. (BBBSNC) provides professional Program Specialists and support staff to recruit, screen and guide community volunteers to demonstrate healthy adult role models and provide positive one-to-one mentorships to youth in Humboldt County through the agency's community- and site-based programs.

Volunteers are required to complete and pass a rigorous background check and screening process to determine suitability to work as a mentor with children and youth. The organization assists families and legal guardians to enroll their children who need and want a mentor in the BBBSNC program; connect matched volunteers and children with community resources; keep matched mentors and children updated on activities offered by the agency; and engage in communication and conflict resolution, among other related services.

These activities are designed to engage children early and often to prevent them from Child Welfare Services intervention, crisis intervention, children's mental health services and similar intervention-related services.
