DISCUSSION:

This proclamation recognizes May 2026 as CalFresh Awareness Month and highlights the critical role the CalFresh program plays in supporting food security for Humboldt County residents.

Through the dedicated efforts of Humboldt County’s Department of Health & Human Services’ (DHHS) staff and community partners, CalFresh provides essential nutrition assistance to over 28,400 individuals, including children, college students and seniors, while ensuring eligible residents can access available benefits.

In addition to improving individual and household well-being, CalFresh contributes significantly to the local economy, bringing more than $65 million in federal funds into Humboldt County in 2025. Ongoing collaboration between DHHS, community-based organizations and medical providers strengthen outreach and access, connecting vulnerable populations to vital services and supporting broader initiatives such as local agriculture, school nutrition programs and workforce development.
