DISCUSSION:
California’s first cases of elk hoof disease have been discovered in two animals in a heard of Roosevelt elk that live in Del Norte County. California is home to Rocky Mountain elk, Roosevelt elk and Tule elk, and this highly infectious disease causes deformed and overgrown hooves that cause elk to limp, become lame and even die.
Shawn Fresz, Lands and Wildlife Program Supervisor with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife will update the Board on the current situation and efforts to combat the disease.
