DISCUSSION:
The annual observance of Black History Month provides the county with the opportunity to reflect on the rich history, culture and contributions of Black individuals locally. Black History Month also serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing journey toward equity and justice in Humboldt County. Through dialogue, activism and allyship, barriers can be dismantled to create more opportunities for Black individuals to thrive. Through these collective efforts the county fosters a sense of unity, respect and empathy, reinforcing the importance of acknowledging and honoring Black heritage beyond the confines of a single month. Black History Month not only celebrates the past but also inspires hope for a future where diversity is embraced, and every voice is heard and valued.

As part of recognizing Black History Month, the Board of Supervisors would like to honor a beloved community leader with a certificate of recognition. Florence Parks of North Coast Big Brothers and Sisters is an exceptional community member and her contributions have been a positive, and much needed, influence on all who have been fortunate enough to interact with her.
