DISCUSSION:

Fuel cost in Humboldt County continue to be far above the state average. According to one website, the United States average is around $3.75 per gallon with California averaging $5.60. In Humboldt County (at the time of this report) the average fuel cost was $6.49 per gallon.

Supervisor Bushnell would like to have County of Humboldt Board of Supervisors send a letter to the Attorney General’s office explaining the financial impact these fuel costs have on the individuals and businesses in Humboldt County. She is further requesting the Attorney General to address steps in helping the rural counties in alleviating this burden.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

The financial impacts to the individual residents of Humboldt County are significant. The increased fuel costs impact the economy on multiple levels.

ALTERNATIVES TO STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS:

The Board of Supervisors could modify the letter or vote not to send a letter to the Attorney General.  This is not recommended as sharing the perspective of Humboldt County officials is important to addressing and potentially reducing the economic impacts to the County.
