Recommendation
That the Board of Supervisors:
1. Appoint Debra Nickols to fill the vacancy on the Loleta Fire Protection District Board of Commissioners.

DISCUSSION:
Mr. Edward Holgersen, a member of the Loleta Fire Protection District Board of Commissioners, appointed by the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors, resigned from the Board as of December 10, 2024. Pursuant to Government Code, Section 1780 (f)(1), when a vacancy is not filled by the district board by appointment, the board of supervisors of the county may appoint a person to fill the vacancy within 90 days of the date of the vacancy. Applicant for the Board of Commissioners of the Loleta Fire Protection District, Debra Nickols, is a resident within the district fulfilling the residential requirement to serve on the Board. The Loleta Fire Protection District requests the Board of Supervisors Affirm the Appointment of Debra Nickols to fill the vacancy.

ALTERNATIVES TO STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS:
The Board of Supervisors may choose to not make this appointment to the Loleta Fire Protection District Board of Commissioners and instead choose to call an election to fill the vacancy. This alternative option may create undue financial hardship on the fire protection district.
