DISCUSSION:

The Board of Supervisors would like to honor the Lost Coast Camp and two camp counselors for their selfless act of heroism. On Tuesday, June 25, 2024, injured hiker, Sashank Upadhyayuka, was rescued on the Lost Coast Trail when six age teen hikers and two camp counselors from the Lost Coast Camp found the victim lying on the trail near the Punta Gorda Lighthouse.

Counselors Solomon Reinman and Jack Davis, both wilderness first-aid certified,  quickly stabilized Sashank and called for help.  A CalFire helicopter was deployed to rescue the hiker, who was then transported for medical attention.  The teen campers also demonstrated their own first-aid training by assisting the counselors during the incident.

The Lost Coast Camp emphasizes safety by requiring every trip leader be wilderness first-aid certified, with campers also receiving first-aid training. The counselors training and quick action during this emergency, along with the campers' assistance, underscores the critical importance of being prepared. First-aid training equips individuals with the skills needed to act confidently in emergencies, potentially saving lives and ensuring the safety of everyone involved.
