DISCUSSION:
Domestic and intimate partner violence remains a serious issue that affects individuals of all ages, backgrounds and communities. Survivors experience a loss of dignity, security and autonomy due to ongoing abuse, which may be physical, emotional, sexual, psychological or economic in nature. The impacts extend to children, who may face long-term consequences such as academic challenges, behavioral issues, substance use and future health problems.
Locally, Humboldt Domestic Violence Services (HDVS) has provided critical support to survivors since 1977, offering safe shelter, resources, advocacy and education. The Board commends HDVS for its vital work in the community and celebrates HCDV’s 48 years of work to improve community safety.
Recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month underscores the county’s commitment to prevention, survivor support and community safety. By collaborating with organizations like HDVS and engaging community members, Humboldt County affirms the importance of challenging harmful norms and breaking the cycle of domestic and intimate partner violence.
