DISCUSSION:
Eureka native Dawn “Dusty” Napier was sworn in as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of California State Commander on June 25, 2021. As State Commander, she will oversee the Department of California’s 64,662 members. She is the second woman veteran and first native American woman veteran to serve in this position in the organization’s 100 years of existence. Commander Napier was born and raised in Eureka, California and graduated from Eureka Senior High School in 1973. She is an enrolled tribal member of the Karuk Tribe.
Commander Napier earned the following awards during her service: Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Medal, National Defense Medal, Sea Service Deployment ribbon, and the Coast Guard Special Operations ribbon.
Commander Napier has held various positions since joining the VFW as a Post and District Commander, Department of CA State Surgeon, Department of CA Junior and Senior Vice Commander, National Aide de Camp and on the National Legislative Committee.
The Board would like to recognize and congratulate Dusty on her many achievements.
