DISCUSSION:
The Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods is part of a nationwide affiliation of local, autonomous organizations of Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) working to help youth of all backgrounds develop qualities needed to become responsible citizens and leaders. It offers access to programs that are designed to drive positive outcomes for youth and to reinforce life skills.
On June 14, 2016 (Item C-6), the Board approved the agreement with Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods for a term of July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017 to teach youth in the community how to resist alcohol, tobacco, other drugs and early sexual behavior. On July 25, 2017 (Item C-14), the Board executed the renewal of the agreement with the Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods with the addition of the SMART Moves, SMART Girls and Passport to Manhood programs that expose youth to activities designed to hone their decision-making and critical thinking skills. On June 26, 2018 (Item C-12), the Board executed the renewal of the agreement with Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods to continue programs to provide youth in the community with tools to resist alcohol, tobacco and other drugs; delay premature sexual activity; and foster a smooth transition from adolescence to adulthood.
With the execution of this agreement, Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods can continue providing age-appropriate modules of SMART Moves, SMART Girls and Passport to Manhood programs which provide youth with the knowledge, skills and self-esteem to make healthy choices and practice responsible behaviors.
Accordingly, DHHS recommends that the Board approve, and authorize the Chair of the Board to execute, the attached agreement with the Boys & Girls Club for FY 2019-20.
