Body

STRATEGIC PLAN:

This action supports the following areas of your Board’s Strategic Plan.

Area of Focus:  Core Services/Other

Strategic Plan Category:  9999 - Core Services/Other

DISCUSSION:

The Humboldt County Animal Shelter in McKinleyville requires support from a nearby veterinary clinic to ensure that exams and procedures are available as needed and on an urgent basis. McKinleyville Animal Care Center is the only provider willing to contract with the county at this time that is near the Animal Shelter. The McKinleyville Animal Care Center has worked reliably with the county for years.

Narrative Explanation of Financial Impact:

The attached agreement with the McKinleyville Animal Care Center does not have a maximum amount payable per year, and instead includes rates for services, which varies based on the service and animal weight. However, staff have estimated the agreement will cost $189,600 for Fiscal Year 2026-27. See attachment 1 - Exhibit B for rates.

Expenditure appropriations related to the attached agreement was included in the Fiscal Year 2026-27  budget for the Animal Shelter (budget unit 1100-278) in the amount of $189,600. Funding for this agreement is available through Spay/Neuter Fees and the General Fund contribution.

STAFFING IMPACT:

Narrative Explanation of Staffing Impact:

No impact to staffing.

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:

None.

ALTERNATIVES TO STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS:

The Board could choose not to approve this contract, but that is not advised as this is an established relationship and there are currently no other providers close enough in proximity to the Animal Shelter that will do this work.
