DISCUSSION:

On July 14, 2020, your Board recognized a national movement to engage in dialogue about diversity and inclusion and directed staff to “explore, prepare and develop strategies and practices to support a diverse workplace and harness the benefits of diversity and inclusion to achieve organizational excellence.” With this directive, staff continue to advance initiatives aimed to enhance and support the values of diversity and inclusion countywide by considering the full range of psychological, physical, and social differences that occur among individuals, such as race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, socioeconomic status, education, marital status, language, age, gender, sexual orientation, mental or physical ability and learning styles to ensure any individual

or group feel welcome, respected, supported, and valued.

Annually, during the month of June, communities reflect on and celebrate the history, progress and contributions of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) community. These celebrations have come to be known as Pride Month. The roots of Pride Month trace back to the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, which is acknowledged as a tipping point for the LGBTQIA+ rights movement in the U.S. In June 2022, the County of Humboldt joined communities across the nation and globe in celebrating Pride Month.

Recognizing the month of June as Pride Month acts to welcome, respect, support and celebrate the existence and contributions of LGBTQIA+ staff and community members. As such, staff recommends your Board of Supervisors approve the attached proclamation declaring June 2023, and annually thereafter, as LGBTQIA+ Pride Month in Humboldt County.
