DISCUSSION:

The resolution affirms the Board's confidence in the Humboldt County Office of Elections and thanks the election staff, vote center workers and nonpartisan volunteers who make elections possible. It comes one week before Nov. 3, 2026, Statewide General Election.

The Office of Elections serves a large, geographically diverse county, including rural and remote communities. Each election depends on permanent staff, temporary workers and voting center staff, along with nonpartisan volunteer organizations that contribute hundreds of hours to voter education and access. Much of this work happens out of public view.

The resolution also reminds the public that election work continues after Election Day. Under state law, staff continue to process eligible ballots, verify voter eligibility, reconcile records, conduct required audits, and canvass and certify results. This process takes several weeks and is a deliberate safeguard of accuracy.

Election workers across the country have faced rising misinformation, harassment and threats. The resolution condemns threats, harassment and intimidation directed toward election workers and voters and affirms that disagreements about elections must be resolved through lawful, peaceful and democratic means.

The resolution is nonpartisan and takes no position on any candidate, party or ballot measure. It affirms that an election's integrity rests on a fair, accurate, transparent and lawful process. It does not affect any election procedure, canvass or certification.
